Ciò si verifica quando il sistema da risolvere non ammette soluzioni, oppure la soluzione è il luogo dei punti singolari di tutte le curve della famiglia assegnata (dopo aver escluso le soluzioni improprie che danno luogo ai punti base della famiglia)

che è una rappresentazione parametrica dell'asse y. Siamo perciò tentati a concludere: l'asse y è l'inviluppo della famiglia assegnata. Se però calcoliamo le derivate parziali rispetto alle variabili x e y
vediamo che esse si annullano in ogni punto dell'asse x. Ne segue che ogni punto del predetto asse è punto singolare per la semicubica passante per il punto considerato. È facile persuadersi che si tratta di punti cuspidali, come mostrato dal grafico di fig. 1

which is a parametric representation of the y axis. We are therefore tempted to conclude: the y-axis is the envelope of the assigned family. However, if we calculate the partial derivatives with respect to the variables x and y
we see that they cancel out in every point of the x axis. It follows that each point of the aforesaid axis is a singular point for the semicubic passing through the point considered. It is easy to persuade that these are cusp points, as shown by the graph in fig. 1.
